How I Keep My Kids Skin Moisturized During the Winter

Thank you Crane USA for sponsoring this post!

Winter is our second favorite season after Fall! We love to do winter activities and barely find ourselves indoors during the season, but with winter comes one problem for us – dry skin. Both kids have had eczema since they were babies and in the winter we’ve found that their dry skin increases once the temperature drops. Keeping the kids’ skin moisturized during the winter comes easily for us now that we know the proper things to do!

Living in New York City the cold is inevitable so when we started to encounter skin problems I thought what’s a mom to do? I did what I know and because dry skin and eczema are so common I wanted to put together a short list of 4 tips to help you keep your kids skin moisturized during the winter! I can’t promise you that this will work for all skin types but these strategies have been proven to work for us season after season.

How I Keep My Kids Skin Moisturized During the Winter

Invest in a humidifier

Crane Humidifier As a child, I slept with a humidifier in my room to help my brother with his respiratory issues and to help reduce the chances of me getting a bloody nose and it worked! When I had children of my own I knew that I would end up having one in their room as well.

This cool mist humidifier by Crane adds moisture into the air which aids in keeping the skin from being dry.

Medical News Today listed out 6 benefits and ways to use a humidifier. The reason the cool mist humidifier works to keep kids skin moisturized in the winter is because of its use of water evaporation. The humidifier mists this evaporated water into the air of the room making it easier to keep nice smooth skin during the winter months.

Although it’s great for winter, it’s not one that can be used only during the winter, there are so many other benefits that keeping one around all year long will benefit the entire family.

Wash in Luke Warm Water

When it’s cold out, we want to hop right into a nice hot bath right? Well in the winter you want to switch it up and wash/shower your kids in lukewarm water instead. The reason this works to keep your kids skin moisturized is because it reduces the chances of stripping the body of its natural oils. Do the same for taking care of your hair in winter also!

Moisturize Immediately After

When you add lotions, creams or moisturizers to the skin right after washing with lukewarm water what you are doing is sealing moisture into the skin. We keep lotion right next to the kid’s beds so once they wash before drying completely we lotion them up with our favorite lotion that is geared toward eczema prone skin.

Drink Water

You know the saying, “you are what you eat”? Well it’s the same for this tip “you are what you drink”! Your skin needs hydration from the inside out so instead of giving your kids a glass of juice with dinner, go ahead and swap it out for water and keep the kids’ skin moisturized during winter and all year round.
