Creating our Homeschool Learning Space + GIVEAWAY

As a family, we have taken on the new adventure of homeschooling! A few years back when I settled on the path to entrepreneurship, I had some very broad goals. And while they may have been broad there were some clear distinctions that happiness, freedom, and family were top of the list.

Of those goals, it included leaving the public school system and traveling as a family and as 2020 rocked the boat for so many with it’s unyielding and endless disasters. As a family, we’ve had some really great wins and the path we envisioned and worked hard towards has begun to unfold.

Winning in 2020

My husband and I both launched businesses this year in branding and credit repair and even more exciting we purchased our first family home in April and moved to Georgia (during a whole pandemic)!

After living in Brooklyn for 7 years we knew this was a good next step. We expanded our family with a new puppy and now have much more space to grow as a family.

With that space among other reasons, we decided it would be a great time to venture into our journey of homeschooling. For the 2020-21 school year and foreseeable future, we have settled on a mix of virtual and homeschool for our kids. We’re all a bit nervous and excited about what’s to come.

In this blog post, I’m sharing some of the details of our virtual/homeschool space for this year. We don’t need much for our space but we got the essentials to get us started for the year. Since the kids are older we wanted to stay away from the colorful playroom decor and instead went for a more modern minimal yet functional space.

You can shop the full room in this storefront, and tour the full room here

Furniture

Flooring. First, we started with the flooring, since it’s a garage we knew that it needed to have some kind of flooring that could double cushion and be just as comfortable for the gym. We grabbed these foam tiles in the 3/4 inch thickness. We work out on this and have had no issue with wear and tear over the last 5 months.

Table Next up was a desk or some kind of table, my main focus when searching was the size and height since I know my kids like the option of yoga balls, rolling chairs, and stools! The table we have is sold out but this one is similar in size color and price.

Chairs. I wanted something that wasn’t going to distract them (i.e rolling chairs) so we opted for the modern ones like below and we’re happy how they turned out. We also let them use my yoga ball!

Chalkboard wall & whiteboard. We had a chalkboard wall in our Brooklyn apartment so we wanted to create a good command unit and art space and snagged our paint from Sherman Williams and grabbed the whiteboard on amazon as well.

Arts & Crafts

As much as we are a technology-loving household, we’re also a fan of creative messy play and we’re looking forward to our art unit studies! To prep our space, we gathered up some art supplies for our art cart including:

  • crayons
  • markers
  • glitter glue
  • construction paper
  • scissors
  • pipe cleaners
  • color pencils
  • play dough
  • paint supplies

GIVEAWAY

We set up our chalkboard wall in the art space using our gifted set of Chalkola chalk markers! See them in action in my most recent youtube homeschool series video! In partnership with Chalkola, I’m giving a 21 chalk markers pack! Chalkola makes art supplies for the creative ones at heart. I like that they can be used on multiple surfaces, perfect for our chalkboard, whiteboard, and filing folders!

Technology

If you leave it up to my kids at only 9 and 7 years old, they would be suited up with the latest MacBook, we however opted for a more affordable option and grabbed the kids a touchscreen Chromebook! This one had really great reviews and the kids like the ability to use it as a touch screen for video games which is similar to their iPad devices.

We chose this one after researching a bunch of different versions. The final decision came down to the screen size and space, I also like the ability to have the google family link right within the computer. It’s just what we need for our virtual learning curriculum and online research units.

We also grabbed wireless mouses, a wall clock, and a google home!

Storage

We snagged our cube storage units from target here but on amazon, they have a replica of the same style. I wanted to grab a more vintage modern look so choosing these ABC and gray rope bins was the perfect accent in the space.

Expanding the HomeSchool Classroom Space

Our space is new and I am sure over the course of the year we will add more to it as we see fit. However, right now it has all we need to get started. The above list is not inclusive of every single item we purchased for our homeschoolers, in order to see a complete list of every item, visit my Amazon storefront.

If you have a homeschool classroom setup, do you have anything else I should add to my list?
